When talking about Hoi An, travelers always talk about an beautiful ancient town lying along poetic Hoai River, featured by unique and old houses, temples and streets. However, you can try discovering another beauty of Hoi An by visiting traditional handicraft villages.

Hoi An is now having 12 handicraft villages with different crafts such as lantern, wooden stuffs, pottery, etc. Here are some suggestions that you should visit when traveling Hoi An.

  1. Kim Bong Carpentry village

Located in Cam Kim commune, the carpentry village has existed for 600 years. Under the Nguyen Dynasty, Kim Bong is a very famous name with amazing wooden arts of work such as boat, house or sculpture pieces.

To get to Kim Bong village, you need to take a ferry-boat from Old Quarter in about 10 minutes. Visiting here, you can see local craftsmen using simple manual tools to create wonderful wooden things, from large boats, houses to sophisticating carvings and furniture.

  1. Tra Que vegetable village

Tra Que is a well-known land in Hoi An for amazing herbs and vegetables. The village is located in Cam Ha commune, about 3km from the town centre. Tra Que has 220 household cultivating different kinds of vegetable.

Visiting the village, you will be introduced more than 20 species of local herbs and vegetable used for making foods in Hoi An. Especially, you will see the vegetable in here is more delicious and fresh than those in other areas. More than that, you will have chance to be a real farmer by experience all the daily activities of the locals in taking care of the farm. You will dress like a local farmer with Non La, brown outfits, sandals and be trained how to hoe up the soil, water, plant the trees, etc.

After all, you can enjoy super delicious foods made from Tra Que vegetable and specialties of Hoi An such as Quang noodle, Cao Lau, etc.

  1. Thanh Ha pottery village

Thanh Ha village is located 3km in the west of Hoi An, lying along Thu Bon River. The village is established in 15th century.

In the past, the products made from Thanh Ha were bowl, cup, pot, big jar, brick, which is provided for Hoi An and its neighborhood. But now the pottery products has become more and more diverse in both kind and model, including beautiful souvenirs that you can buy.

Visiting the village, you can discover the methods and techniques of making pottery from the locals. These methods have existed for a very long time, from generation to generation in the village. Almost all the procedures are made by hand and require a lot of manual skills.

  1. Phuoc Kieu bronze casting village

With the age of more than 400 years, Phuoc Kieu is one of the most famous destinations in Hoi An. You can find various products made from bronze, from statues or instruments to daily items such as pot, pan, tray, vase, etc.

You can discover how hard and special method to make great bronzed products of the locals. You can also buy interesting things made of bronze in Phuoc Kieu village.
