Phu Quoc is a big island located in Kien Giang Province in southern Vietnam. It is a paradise for beach lovers with stretched white-sand beaches, wonderful mountainous landscapes, amazing seascapes as well as outstanding seafood and specialities.
Today, Kien Giang authority and Vietnamese Government have made a lot of investment into Phu Quoc to develop its potentials. Here are four biggest changes which make Phu Quoc Island more convenient and attractive to tourists.
1. Direct flights
In December 2nd 2012, the Phu Quoc International Airport was officially opened with the first direct flight. In the past, due to short runway and undeveloped infrastructure, the airport was only available for small planes from Ho Chi Min City. However, today, a lot of domestic airlines have operated many domestic two-way flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, etc to Phu Quoc.
The airport is able to handle about 25 flights per day with different kinds of jets. The time and cost are flexible and acceptable. Especially, direct flights to other countries are also operated such as Singapore and Sihanoukville International Airport. It is very helpful for international tourists.
2. National power transmission
Local people on Phu Quoc Island used to use electricity by diesel or small electric generator which carries a very high cost comparing to power cost in mainland. Moreover, the power was provided few hours per day and leaded the prices for hotels, restaurant and other services be higher.
In June 16th 2014, the national power transmission officially served the whole island. It is a very great change for the development of Phu Quoc Island. The implementation of national power makes a lot of tourist services on the island get a huge reduction on price.
3. Visa exemption
From March 10th 2014, international tourists traveling Phu Quoc do not need Vietnam visa for less than 30 days. This is new policy approved by Vietnam’s Prime Minister, aiming to help Phu Quoc attracting more and more international tourists. In case international visitors enter through an international border gate (both by air and by sea), and stay in that area then move to Phu Quoc, they are also exempted from Vietnam visa.
4. New road system
In early 2012, Phu Quoc started a project of building new main roads on the whole island. Therefore, today, instead of soil dusty road, new asphalt road system was constructed. After a year of building, a lot of clean and spacious roads have been completed, helping transportation among tourist destinations and center town such as Duong Dong and An Thoi more convenient. With this new road system, you can hire a bike or motorbike and easily ride around the island.
